In 1930, a nun in Poland named Sister Faustina received visions from Jesus. He asked her to have his image painted, with the message: "Jesus, I Trust in You!" One hand is raised in a gesture of blessing, with the other over his heart. Two rays emanate from Jesus' heart. The red ray represents blood, which is the life of souls. The pale ray symbolizes water, which makes souls righteous. Both rays were opened when he was pierced in the side on the cross. Jesus is the sole subject in the painting - a light in the darkness. The image communicates God's great desire for our eternal happiness, through persistent forgiveness when we fall short.
The Divine Mercy novena begins on Good Friday, and concludes on the Sunday after Easter. In these nine days, a special rosary is prayed - the Divine Mercy chaplet. It is traditionally offered for someone close to death, but can be for yourself or anyone else. The person praying the chaplet and the person they are praying for will receive great blessings and mercy.
